Alexandre Arrechea's Playable Basketball Hoop Tree in Toronto

Installation

Alexandre Arrechea's Orange Functional turns the familiar basketball hoop into a branching red steel tree, with over twenty rims at varying heights. Installed at Biidaasige Park in Toronto as part of the Lassonde Art Trail, the sculpture invites passersby to shoot, scrambling the usual geometry of the game.

The work evolved from Arrechea's 2010 Orange Tree series and became playable in 2022. Balls rise into the branches and drop through lower hoops, so a missed shot can become a basket. The sculpture's red steel canopy stands among younger trees, making the fruit-tree metaphor literal.
