After nearly four years of conservation, Correggio's Madonna of St Sebastian has been freed from layers of old varnish and overpaint. The Dresden altarpiece now reveals its original richness: the Virgin's cloak shifts from murky green to Marian blue, while the saints' drapery emerges in luminous white. This transformation was guided by a sixteenth-century engraving that recorded details lost to time.

The rejuvenated painting serves as a centerpiece for 'Correggio: Movingly Human', the first full-career survey outside Italy. With rare loans from the Louvre and the Prado, the exhibition seeks to reconstruct the artist's visual world. Restoration even recovered the arrow in Sebastian's hip and a pilgrim's hat, giving the composition a newly discovered depth and drama.
