Architecture
Peter Zumthor's expansion for Fondation Beyeler introduces three new structures, including the Wyss building with its rammed concrete walls made from Jura limestone. The Y-shaped plan preserves ancient trees, while the spiral, side-lit galleries create a contemplative journey through Modern art. The design emphasizes a direct encounter with art, omitting a reception area.
The expansion doubles the surrounding parkland, now home to works by Louise Bourgeois, Rachel Whiteread, and Pierre Huyghe. Zumthor's large windows frame views of the Jura Mountains and Black Forest, blending architecture with nature. The Ammann Pavilion, with its cherry- and pear-wood interior, offers an intimate space for performances, further enriching the museum's visual and spatial experience.
