Shawne Brown’s ‘See the Elephant’ is a photographic journey through his native Tennessee and the Kansas heartland. The images are rooted in place, capturing the cultural and physical landscape with a sense of lived experience. There’s a raw familiarity here, but also a hint of estrangement in the quiet margins of the region.
The title borrows from a Civil War expression about losing illusions through experience. Brown uses that idea to frame his own complicated relationship with home. His images are neither romantic nor condemning, just attentive to the details that make a landscape personal. This is a strong body of work worth a closer look.
