Film
Shot on 16mm, Muscle Memory unfolds as a quiet, textured portrait of youth in Kharkiv. Director Mikayla Jean Miller steps back and lets ordinary gestures speak; skipping ropes and boxing gloves coexist with sirens, and the grain of the film warms a reality that risks feeling distant. The result is an intimate record of bodies learning to remember and endure.
What stays with you is the attention to sound as much as image. Birdsong, trams and the rhythmic thud of strikes shape a landscape where war becomes just another layer. Miller's framing resists drama; instead, it lets these children simply exist, and in that stillness we feel a connection that transcends circumstance. A deeply humane work.
