Art
Marigold Santos navigates memory and myth through layered, spectral figures that dissolve into marbled, ink-washed grounds. Her imagery pulls from aswang folklore and the diasporic experience, producing silhouettes that question colonialism, ancestral erasure, and the act of survival. Figures appear fluid and morphing, woven or veiled, caught in a trance that feels both personal and ancestral.
Her recent paintings employ hand-marbled paper and Chinese ink to build hypnotic textures, while extended practice in ceramics and tattooing keeps the work grounded in materiality. Santos reclaims monstrous figures as agents of self-determination, riffing on themes of motherhood, invisible labor, and resistance. The resulting images feel less like illustrations and more like portals into ancestral memory.
