After a meticulous restoration funded by Friends of Florence, Fra Angelico's earliest altarpiece is back in its original home in Fiesole. The project uncovered the painter's original stone throne, long hidden beneath Lorenzo di Credi's later azure lapis lazuli overpainting, and revealed the delicate interplay between the two artists' hands.

The altarpiece, created between 1420 and 1423, showcases Fra Angelico's refined colours, gold ground and intricate figures. Di Credi's 1501 reinterpretation replaced the Gothic triptych with a single Renaissance image, adding a luminous landscape and canopy. Now, infrared reflectography lets us imagine the hidden throne, while conservation stabilises the wood and repairs cracks.
