Sharmistha Ray's Geometry of Play Pickleball Courts

Design

Sharmistha Ray turns three Pittsburgh pickleball courts into sprawling geometric canvases. The artist's bold abstractions—target-like spheres, diamonds, and a compass-like eye—blur the line between sport and visual art, inviting players and viewers alike into a shared experience of color and form.

Commissioned for the Arts Landing civic project, Ray's work nods to Hilma af Klint and Bauhaus philosophy, grounding contemporary abstraction in spiritual and functional traditions. The painted courts become a vibrant public space where community, play, and artistic expression converge.
