Art
Valerie Brathwaite’s sculptures defy categorization, blending organic forms with bold, unexpected colors. Her work spans clay, concrete, and fabric, evoking nature and the human body through sinuous, sensual volumes. The artist saw color as a subversive tool, shaping form itself into pop-infused abstractions that pulse with vitality.
From her Dancing Vegetables series to horizontal concrete pieces placed directly on museum floors, Brathwaite’s practice constantly evolved. Drawing and sculpture fed each other, creating a fluid dialogue between two and three dimensions. Her legacy bridges Caribbean and Venezuelan art, offering a fresh, cosmopolitan perspective on modernist abstraction.
