Katherine Wolkoff Meditates on Absence in Tender Photos of Deer Beds

Photography

Wolkoff traces deer paths on Block Island to find where deer have slept, capturing the flattened grass as evidence of a quiet, transient presence. Printed nearly life-size, these horizonless images become soft, nest-like abstractions that evoke comfort and resilience.

The series sidesteps the hunter’s gaze, focusing instead on what remains after the animal has left. Each bed is a tender document of rest and survival, inviting slow looking and reflection on the unseen rhythms of the natural world.
