Daniel González and Matthew Reinhart's collaborative project 'Luceros y Penumbres' transforms the rotunda of Los Angeles Central Library into a massive pop-up book, breaking the Guinness World Record. Rising 11 feet and spanning 31 feet, the piece uses traditional bookbinding materials like fabric, paper, and adhesive, echoing the craft of classic pop-up design.
The book's two spreads celebrate Los Angeles' diverse cultures and the library's role as a beacon of learning. One page features a tree with the city skyline, while the other depicts the library facade with the bilingual phrase 'Each person is a library.' The installation is part of a centennial celebration and will remain on view through November 2026.
