Martha Schwartz Partners has created Pollinator Machine, a monumental installation at Shanghai’s Taipingqiao Park that reimagines the tulip magnolia as an inhabitable structure. Scaling the flower’s reproductive organs to nearly ten meters, the piece invites visitors to step inside and experience pollination from a beetle’s perspective—a clever inversion of human-scale observation.

The design draws on the magnolia’s ancient evolutionary strategy of beetle pollination, translating its sequential bloom into a spatial journey. Inside, curved forms and organic geometry echo the flower’s anatomy, while the experience prompts reflection on biodiversity and ecological resilience. It’s a rare fusion of landscape architecture, art, and environmental storytelling.
