Textmode Overlay – Live ASCII Art for Canvas and Video

A free, open-source browser extension that turns canvas and video elements into real-time ASCII art, processed locally.

The page operates in a palette of near-black and bone white, with a single warm gray as an accent. It is a deliberate act of tonal reduction: nothing competes with the product’s conceptual core—ASCII as both medium and texture. The typeface, Monogram Extended, combines monospaced regularity with a slightly extended width, giving headings a mechanical, almost typecast quality. That choice makes the entire site feel like a specimen sheet for the extension itself. The composition is disciplined to the point of severity. A persistent top bar frames every scroll position, while a numbered progress track (01–10) makes the long vertical journey feel like a chaptered document. Headlines like “TURN THE WEB INTO TEXTMODE” and “SEE WHAT’S BEEN POURED.” hang in generous whitespace, left-aligned and set in large, tight type. The contrast between these oversized statements and the tiny labels around them creates a strong typographic hierarchy. The rhythm is slow and editorial, with each section introduced as a distinct plate. The art direction is unusual in that it doesn’t try to show ASCII art heroically. Instead, the interface itself becomes a demonstration: the browser frame, the selection tool, the export options. The “Post-FX stack” and “Brightness + contour” features are listed as plain text, reinforcing that the product is a utility. The interaction feeling is quiet, precise, non-gimmicky—as if the site is a technical manual with the production values of a gallery catalog. This restraint makes the brand atmosphere feel serious, focused, and intellectually cool.
