Janice Chan's analog photographs turn the annual Weifang International Kite Festival into a surreal streetscape above. Giant tropical fish and Shin Ramyun packets drift alongside traditional kites, their absurd scale anchored by the ordinary crowd below. Chan's Nikon F4 and Kodak Gold 200 capture the delicate negotiation between wind and tether, between flight and ground.
What makes this series compelling is its attention to the human theater surrounding the kites. Spectators, food stalls, and open fields become as important as the airborne objects. Chan’s architectural eye frames the festival as a temporary public space built from collective gazing. The sky becomes a canvas, and looking becomes participation.
