Sipho Mabona's Calabash Sculptures from Recycled Milk Cartons

Installation

Sipho Mabona’s new series reworks dried calabashes into vibrant collages of recycled milk cartons and colorful threads, punctuated by mirrored reflections. Each piece carries a quiet audio of the artist’s late father reading poetry, making memory tangible. The visual contrast between the organic gourd and the printed packaging is striking.

The sculptures rest on cylindrical plinths made from soil, cow dung, and glue, evoking the rondavel huts of rural South Africa. Mabona layers personal history with cultural symbolism—calabashes as vessels for food, ritual, and musical resonance. The result is a deeply felt dialogue between generations, crafted from humble materials and transformed into luminous objects.
